In 1934, Babe Ruth led a group of some of the greatest baseball players in the game on a tour of Japan in an effort to promote America’s Pastime internationally. The plan worked exceptionally well and Ruth helped draw Japanese fans to the game and baseball fandom exploded in the Japanese cultural consciousness. Japan’s professional leagues soared in popularity and Ruth became the figurehead of professional baseball again, even in the twilight of his brilliant career.

Menko is a popular card game in Japan and the cards which make up the game on this sheet include a regular card deck of 52 cards, each featuring an image of a popular Japanese professional ballplayer and the Joker, which of course featured the artful image of Ruth. This uncut sheet has been mindfully framed with Smithsonian conservation framing techniques, with no tapes or adhesives used on the sheet whatsoever to protect it's superb condition and collectible integrity.
