Signature in ink, “Your friend, John Brown,” on an off-white 5.75 x .1” slip affixed to the bottom border of an oval period image of Brown by Lawrence’s of New York, which overall measures about 8” x 10.” In very good condition, with some light toning and creasing to slip; scattered light soiling overall to image portion, however piece overall presents nicely. A passionate opponent of slavery, the Connecticut born farmer (1800–1859), famously planned to capture Harper’s Ferry and distribute its weapons to slaves; his plot was foiled when captured by Robert E. Lee and subsequently hanged. A seldom-seen and desirable signed image of the ardent abolitionist leader.
