Incredible signed & hand written Letter just days before his resignation from Knesset Signed “D. Ben-Gurion” in Hebrew, one page, measuring an overall size 5” x 8.5” and dated May 12, 1970. Not fully translated. Writing from his home in a kibbutz in the Negev desert, Israel’s first Prime Minister thanks Mr. M. Ahashar-Jerus in Jerusalem for the book he has received. With an unrelated postmarked stamped envelope, not addressed by Ben-Gurion. A few days later, Ben-Gurion handwrote another letter, this time to the Speaker of the Knesset, Reuven Barkatt. Received on May 18th, Ben-Gurion wrote, in part, “For some time I have not been able to come to Knesset sessions, and I do not see any possibility in the future, either, of taking part. I am not entitled to bear the name of Knesset member if I cannot fulfill my obligation to participate, and I hereby submit my resignation.” While this letter ended his political career, it did not end his speaking out on issues. Within days of his resignation, he was interviewed by “Time” magazine. Reported in the press on May 24th, a week before its publication, Ben-Gurion commented on the land acquired by Israel after the 1967 Six-Day War: “I consider peace more important than territory...For peace, I would be for giving back all the captured areas, with the exception of Jerusalem and the Golan Heights...” Of the areas captured by Israel in 1967, only East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights remain under Israeli control. Overall in fine condition with some staple holes, not affecting the signature. We guarantee this lot to pass PSA/DNA or JSA authentication, and full certification can be arranged for an additional fee (please contact us for further details).
