A former general in the Civil War, Grant served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869-1877. He was a key figure in granting rights to African-Americans after slavery was abolished with the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment and was instrumental in stabilizing the Union and overseeing the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. One page 8 ½” x 11” document dated “17th April 1871” and signed by Grant with a Nm/Mt signature. Partly-printed document reads in full: I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the seal of the United States to an Envelope addressed to His Majesty the Mikado of Japan, containing letter of credence C.E. De Long, Esq. as E.E.+ M.P. of the U.S. to Japan dated this day and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant. Ulysses S. Grant”. The document has two folds and exhibits foxing around the edges from previous matting. Light overall wear. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
