Roberto Clemente was inducted posthumously to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 after a fatal aviation accident on December 31, 1972 while attempting to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his 1972 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates getting his 3,000th Major League hit. Playing 18 seasons with the Pirates, Clemente was a National League MVP, 12-time All-Star, 4-time batting champion, and 12-time Gold Glove winner. Clemente endorsed this 2.75-x 6-inch check, June 7, 1972, in the amount of $800.00 to Mellon Bank. Using a blue, ball-point pen, Clemente signed “Roberto Clemente” on the bottom of the check.
