President Lincoln Grants Meeting with Abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner on Same Day as Mary Lincoln's White House Ball!

Choice handwritten signed note as President, February 5, 1962, penned on a 3.25" x 2" sheet of paper. Getting in some business during what was suppose to be a day of entertainment at the White House, Lincoln grants Senator Charles Sumner a meeting, writing in full: "I would be glad to see Mr. Senator Sumner, A. Lincoln / Feb. 5 1862." Sumner would be one of the Senate's leading abolitionists. Along with being a close personal friend to President Lincoln, Sumner would prove to be a critical ally within the Senate, helping to persuade and push along not only anti-slavery legislation, but also post Civil War legislation that would help repair the country in the wake of Lincoln's assassination and the conclusion of the war.

Nicely matted along with a 5" x 8" portrait CDV of Lincoln which bears a stamp of "Eugene J. Ball, Photographer, Oak Park, Ill." and a vintage handwritten notation on the verso (visible through double-sided glass) that reads "Lincoln with a smile, Sunday before his assassination, No 2389 D, By Alex Gardner, Washington DC." Display measures 11" x 16" overall and is in excellent condition. We guarantee this lot to pass PSA/DNA or JSA authentication, and full certification can be arranged for an additional fee (please contact us at Contactus@iconicauctions.com for further details).
