During the California Gold Rush in early 1848 at Sutter's Mill, financiers and entrepreneurs from all over North America and the world flocked to California, drawn by the promise of huge profits. Vermont native Henry Wells of Wells and Company and New Yorker William G. Fargo of Livingston, Fargo and Company watched the California economy boom with keen interest. After four years and several mergers (including the formation of American Express with third rival John Warren Butterfield), the two finally moved out west to bring Wells, Fargo & Company and its express and banking services to California. Offered here is a very rare stock certificate that is signed by both Wells & Fargo. It is dated January 16, 1865. It certifies that Daniel Butterfield of New York (son of the aforementioned John Warren Butterfield) is entitled to 2 shares of the American Express Company. The document measures 8.25" x 12.25". It is signed at the conclusion by William G. Fargo (Secretary) and Henry Wells (President) as well as the Treasurer, Alex Holland. In overall fine condition with scattered staining to the front and back.
