John Gotti was perhaps the last of a passing breed, a larger-than-life mob figure who enjoyed the limelight and celebrity status afforded him by the media. Nicknamed first the "Dapper Don" for his elegant style, and later the "Teflon Don" due to his numerous acquittals, Gotti's name today is as familiar to the American public as that of Al Capone, Lucky Luciano or Bugsy Siegel. After numerous failed attempts to prosecute him, he was finally convicted in 1992 under RICO charges in Brooklyn's federal district court. Sentenced to life in prison without parole, he eventually succumbed to cancer on June 10, 2002. Offered is a 7" x 10" card penned by John Gotti during his incarceration at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners, near the end of his life. The card is written to the daughter of mobster George DeCicco, longtime Capo in the Gambino crime family and brother of Frank DeCicco, who was killed in a car bomb intended for Gotti himself. The letter reads: "Barbara, As always, I hope this quick card finds you and family well. As for me, I feel great! As you can see from the envelope I'm at Springfield - and in the "Hole". We're only allowed a 2 inch stub of pencil to write with and the floor is my "desk" so I'll have to keep this very short. I just want you to know that I have both you and Mary on my mind and I hope everything is as you wrote in your letter - perfect. I'll write a letter soon as the living conditions improve. Give my love to Gina, Reynold, your brother, father and [unknown] - take care and stay strong! Much love, Johnny". In fine condition with some rubbing to the graphite with which the mobster penned the note. Authenticated & encapsulated by Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
