Although letters from Dwight D. Eisenhower on White House letterhead are seen on the market fairly frequently, it is rare that they are written to anybody of particular importance or have content of interest. Offered here is one of those seldom seen pieces, a 7" x 10.25" letter, dated December 29, 1959, written from Eisenhower to his best friend, Barry T. Leithead, thanking him for his unwavering friendship and support. The heartwarming text reads, in part: "Your support has meant more to me than words can say. Your readiness to help, your understanding of my difficulties, your disinterested counsel and the complete unselfishness with which you have extended so many courtesies to me and to my family, have helped me immeasurably and times without number over some tough and discouraging spots." Eisenhower spends a full four paragraphs gushing over how much Leithead's friendship means to him, ending with: "...sometimes, in my preoccupation with public affairs, I feel that I may be remiss in letting my best friends know that my obligation to them is deep and everlasting. Indeed, it is one debt I truly cherish." Hands down the most heartfelt and emotional letter we have ever offered from Eisenhower! Signed at the conclusion with a friendly and personal, "D.E." in black ink. In good condition, with two horizontal creases. Accompanied by a full Letter of Grading & Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS) with the autograph receiving a grade of GEM MINT 10!
