Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15.75" x 19.5", September 9, 1861. President Lincoln appoints Charles B. White as "Assistant Surgeon in the service of the United States". Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of War Simon Cameron. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, with a horizontal fold touching bottom of Lincoln’s signature, some scattered light toning and soiling, and a couple of trivial spots. No seal is present. White entered the army as assistant surgeon in 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. After the battle of Malvern Hill, it was necessary for several surgeons to remain with the wounded, and volunteers were called for. Dr. White was among the first to offer his services. At this stage of the war no consideration was shown to medical officers, and he consequently became a prisoner. He returned to the Aarmy of the Potomac, serving in the several actions, until after the battle of Fredericksburg. He was eventually made Acting Medical Purveyor at New Orleans. During an epidemic of yellow fever at Jackson Barracks, he was a volunteer medical attendant. A choice Lincoln signed document commemorating the beginning of an excellent career in medical care and service to the United States, in good overall condition. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
