Autograph Note Signed, “Freud,” in German, on the reverse of a 4” x 2” business card belonging to the recipient, Dr. Paul Federn, January 2, 1909. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Freud’s hand. The envelope has expected wear, note is lightly toned, else Fine condition.
Freud’s note, translated, in full, “Mr. Riesz, aged 28, psychically and sexually impotent. Had with great difficulty an experience of coitus and agreed for a psychoanalysis with Dr. Steiner. Thank you for the time given to the patient - Freud"
Freud hypothesized the existence of libido, instinctual psychic energy that in psychoanalytic theory is derived from primitive biological urges. Federn became one of Freud's earliest followers after reading his Interpretation of Dreams; he later served as Freud's surrogate at conferences once the pioneering psychoanalyst was stricken with cancer in the 1920s. An extremely desirable piece, given its content directly related to Freud's psychosexual work. Authenticated and encapsulated by Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
