Five strands of hair belonging to Greek-American soprano Maria Callas, the largest of which measures 1.25.” This unique relic that directly links us to Callas’s personage, is nicely housed within plastic, which has been affixed to an 8.5" x 11" sheet on light card stock below her image, and with University Archives certification along the bottom. From the John Reznikoff Hair Collection.

The original lock was acquired as a consigned piece from Bergdorf Goodman via auction and will be accompanied by the consignment details. Hair collecting was a proper and very personal way of remembering someone, and began during the Victorian era. It predated photography and was superior to autograph collecting as it better connected the person with the owner. Full Letter of Authenticity from John Reznikoff, a noted expert in the field, including a copy of the Guinness Book of World Record page, noting Reznikoff's collection. Includes documentation setting forth provenance.

Maria Callas (1923–1977) was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice, and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as “La Divina.”
