Though the Babe and the Iron Horse shared an uneasy relationship throughout their shared pinstriped tenure, the tragic revelation of Lou Gehrig's diagnosis in 1939 brought an immediate thaw, and photos of Ruth embracing his old teammate shortly after his Independence Day farewell speech, and another of the forlorn legend at the foot of Gehrig's casket two years later, speak to the unbreakable bond of brothers in arms. Add this marvelous photo to that list of heart-warming and heart-breaking images, snapped by an official Metro-Goldwyn Mayer studio photographer on the set of a Gary Cooper directed Lou Gehrig biopic that would debut in 1942 as "The Pride of the Yankees." It is reported that this photographer was dating the original recipient's aunt at the time, a connection that bore fruit for the young fan in the form of this over-sized batting pose neatly scripted with the inscription, "To my friend Billy Sears, From Babe Ruth." Black fountain pen ink rates a solid 7/10 with a large signature. Photo exhibits some trivial wear but is in otherwise very fine condition. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
