Beginning in 1935, architect Frank Lloyd Wright would trek to Arizona every winter. In 1937, he purchased the plot of land that would eventually become his home and school in Scottsdale, Arizona. Taliesin West would be the laboratory for Wright's work from then until his death in 1959. In 1957, Arizona State University President Grady Gammage had a vision to create a distinct university auditorium on the campus. He called upon his close friend Wright to assist with the project. His first statement about the location was, "I believe this is the site. The structure should be circular in design and yes, with outstretched arms, saying 'Welcome to ASU!'" The auditorium has since become home to performances of hundreds of well-known celebrities, musicians and performers, as well as touring Broadway casts. Offered here is a letter dated February 22, 1957 on Taliesin West letterhead addressed to Grady Gammage from Frank Lloyd Wright, letting him know he will be returning to Arizona soon and that he has "sent final drawings of the circular auditorium" (which we now know as Gammage). Wright has signed the letter at the conclusion in black ballpoint pen. In fine condition with some spots of staining that do not at all affect the signature and two vertical creases. An awesome piece of history for one of Wright's most acclaimed works in his home of Arizona. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
