The man who would be selected by Branch Rickey to break the color barrier in modern baseball began his career in the Negro Leagues. In 1945 Robinson played his only season in black baseball as a shortstop with the Kansas City Monarchs. A former UCLA football All American, Robinson had played college and semi-professional baseball but was lacking professional experience. In addition to strengthening the Monarchs' war-depleted infield and displaying the right attitude and winning spirit, he also proved to be an outstanding hitter and aggressive base stealer and runner. He turned out to be one of the best infielders in the Negro Leagues that year, was discovered by Rickey, and the rest - as they say - is history. Offered here is an incredible Official Negro League baseball used in the Negro League, likely after Robinson had moved up to the Big Leagues and made his place in history. The vintage baseball has been signed by Robinson on a side panel in blue ballpoint pen, as well as his Brooklyn teammates Gil Hodges, Don Zimmer and 3 others. The ball shows excellent use, with scuffing and dirt remnants throughout, as well as scattered spots of staining. A rare opportunity to own a relic hearkening to the beginning of Jackie Robinson's career! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
