Offered here is a military appointment dated February 21st, 1862, a particularly dark day for the US President. During the night of February 20th, Abraham Lincoln would see his 12 year old son, William Wallace "Willie" Lincoln pass away of a typhoid-like disease. Even with the tragic event, the Civil War was in full heat, with the Confederates taking a major victory on February 21st at the Battle of Valverde which held the New Mexico Territory from Union forces. Even with all this going on, failure on a Military front, a tragic death of a 12 year old son, Abraham Lincoln kept one foot in front of the other signing this Civil War dated (Feb 21st, 1862) 14" x 17" partly printed vellum document for the Army department of Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers appointment to the rank of Captain. If the timeline wasn't enough with this document, the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers would serve a critical role in the Civil War, maintaining many processes to the militia/volunteer members of the Army. Sadly things wouldn't get any easier for Lincoln as the next day (Feb 22nd) Jefferson Davis would be inaugurated as the first (and only) President of the Confederate States of America. A historically significant document in the heart of what is one of the hardest times during Lincolns tested Presidency! Overall in fine condition with the document affixed to vintage backing with discoloration, horizontal, warping & vertical folds, along with handling wear.
