Similar to the commencement of Lou Gehrig's career when Wally Pipp was injured and Larrapin' Lou was called up, Derek Jeter’s major league career would start when he was moved up from the minors to the majors due to injuries involving starting infielders Tony Fernandez & Pat Kelly in 1995. The rest, as they say, is history! Jeter suited up in pinstripes from his first year in 1995 all the way through his retirement in 2014, contributing to five World Series titles and solidifying his place in Yankee history by being named captain in 2003. He was the first true leader of the team since Thurman Munson in the 1970s. Despite Jeter’s early success, single signed rookie-era Budig baseballs are extremely rare & desirable. Similar to another former Yankee captain, Mickey Mantle, Derek’s vintage signature is distinct & varies from his present signature. Offered here is one of those rare examples, signed in blue ballpoint on the sweet spot of an OAL (Budig) ball that has stood the test of time nicely. The ball exhibits moderate toning, but the signature is bold and beautiful. It should be noted that prior to Jeter signing with Steiner Sports, he was very reluctant to sign unless contracted, which was generally only for team signed balls. A true investment grade Jeter item! Authenticated by James Spence Authentication (JSA) with a full letter of authenticity.
