The “Holy Grail” of Post-War Baseball Cards: that is how one may most aptly describe this incredibly sought-after piece. Originally produced as part of the “high-number” short print, the legendary 1952 Topps Mantle #311’s manufacture resulted in limited quantities making their way to market. Ultimately, the remainder were famously dumped into the sea off the Jersey Shore. As such, nearly 70 years later—the demand far outweighs the supply. Though universally prized by collectors, Mantle 1952 Topps prices have truly soared as of late, with this card recently cementing itself as the pinnacle of the booming Sports Card market. In early 2021, PWCC sold a PSA graded MINT 9 version of this card for an astounding $5.2 million, rendering it the most expensive baseball card ever sold. And just a few weeks ago, a PSA NM-MT 8 was sold for a record-setting $1.56 million. Despite the slight off-centering of this example, the overall condition is remarkably fine—superlative imagery and stunningly crisp colors—as the PSA 8 NM-MT designation would indicate. Among the 1,409 examples of this iconic card graded by PSA, this specimen rates in the Top 5%—a most impressive and deserving designation for this vintage gem. A must-have, investment-level centerpiece for only the most discerning of Sports card collectors.
