The 2008 feature film "The Express" brought about a resurgence in interest for this tragic superstar, but for those who remember his heroics both on and off the field, his star never faded. Born into the gritty steel belt of western Pennsylvania which has served as the training grounds for many of the gridiron's greatest stars, Davis would find more than 50 college scholarships waiting for him upon his high school graduation. He would follow in the footsteps of his own football idol, the great Jim Brown, choosing Syracuse University, and even going so far as to request the number "44" jersey that Brown had worn with such distinction. Only Davis could have done those digits justice.

This historic football was presented to our consignor by the legendary Ernie Davis at the "Syracuse Hotel," after the November 4, 1961 contest between Syracuse and Pittsburgh. Along with Davis' jersey from the game, which we previously sold last year, here we feature a game ball from the Orangemen's 28-9 victory over the Panthers. Amazingly, as can be seen from the presented image of Davis and the boy who originally received the football, it once showcased a perfect signature from the 1961 Heisman winner on one of the panels, but due to heavy usage the ink is unfortunately no longer visible. Still, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a game-used piece from the College Hall of Fame icon with solid photo identification. The official "Wilson TD" ball features "Syracuse 28," and the date in orange paint, while "Pittsburgh 9" is presented in navy blue. An amazing collegiate artifact from one of the most notable heroes in all of sports.

Originally consigned by Mr. Gordon to a Heritage Auction in 2011, the ball is accompanied by a copy of a Letter of provenance from Mr. Gordon.
