This exceptional Abraham Lincoln vintage signed display piece was created by decoratively combining an ideal and extremely desirable “full signature” cut of our sixteenth President together with a circa 1860 engraving derived from a famous early Mathew Brady photograph of Lincoln. The piece, which is period in composition, is unique in that the signature has not been simply mounted upon the print. Instead, a portion of the print, equal in dimension to the cut, was carefully removed and then replaced with the cut. The near seamless execution of that process has resulted in the cut laying flush with the print, thus creating the appearance that Lincoln’s signature was penned directly on the piece. The signature, “Abraham Lincoln,” has been boldly scripted in black ink and is notable both for its size and strength. Measuring an impressive 2.75 inches in length and displaying exceptional contrast, it stands in stark contrast to the much more common “A. Lincoln” signatures normally found on letters and documents. Grading a virtually flawless “9/10,” it represents a particularly outstanding example of one of the most desirable of all Presidential signatures, and is presented with an extraordinary period engraving manufactured specifically for display. As noted directly upon the piece, the photo is by “M. H. Brady” and the engraver, who is also the publisher, is “J. C. Buttre, 48 Frankling St. N.Y.” The Brady photo from which this engraving is derived is perhaps the most famous image of Lincoln known and has been featured on many important political pieces over the years. The engraving (5" x 8.25") was once matted and displays a small area of uneven toning along the extreme edge of the border as a result. This is an outstanding and unique Lincoln signed display.
