Missourian Democrat (1908–1886), who served six years as President pro tempore of the US Senate. Brief Autograph Letter Signed, “D R Atchison, Pres[ident] pro tempore of the Senate" 1 page, 7.75” x 4.25,” July 24, 1854. Atchison grants a leave of absence “for one month during the recess of the Senate.” In very good to fine condition, with expected folds, overall scattered wrinking, and tape remnant to reverse top edge, none of which affect the bold handwriting.
