THE BUCK STOPS HERE! Mint $1 Bill, engraved with Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder’s signature, signed and presented to Snyder by President Truman. Harry S. Truman archive, beautifully displayed in a 25" x 33" frame, the Collection comprises:
(1) One Dollar Bill Signed: “Harry S. Truman.” Silver Certificate, $1 bill, Series 1935C, engraved with the signatures “W.A. Julian / Treasurer of the United States” and “John W. Snyder / Secretary of the Treasury.” No folds. Uncirculated. In mint condition.
( (2) Informal Photograph Signed “Harry S Truman” on the matte. Color, 6” x 4.5 visible, overall 8.5” x 7.75” Ostensibly taken at the Truman home in Independence, Missouri, picturing the former President, in his 80s, and his Secretary of the Treasury holding an uncut sheet of $1 bills. An unidentified woman is also pictured. Fine condition.
(3) Pale green White House envelope, 7.25” x 4.75”, boldly addressed by Truman to “Sec. of Treas / Personal.” Opened at flap. Fine condition.
(4) Partly Printed Document Signed “Leslie L. Biffle” as Secretary of the Senate, one page, 8” x 6.75”. Noted in type: “copy” but personally signed. Headed “In Executive Session, Senate of the United States / Tuesday, June 11, 1946.” In full, “Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the following-named person to the office named agreeably to his said nomination: Department of the Treasury. John W. Snyder to be Secretary of the Treasury. Attest: [signed] Leslie L. Biffle” as Secretary. Gold seal of the United States Senate, 2” diameter, affixed onto green ribbon to the left of signature.
(5) 13.5” x 8” period photographic reproduction (original in the National Archives, of course) from the Snyder Estate of President Truman’s June 6, 1946 nomination of Snyder to be Secretary of the Treasury. This was originally attached to the Senate Resolution mentioned above.

According to the Truman Library, “On more than one occasion President Truman referred to the desk sign in public statements. For example, in an address at the National War College on December 19, 1952, Mr. Truman said, ‘You know, it's easy for the Monday morning quarterback to say what the coach should have done, after the game is over. But when the decision is up before you – and on my desk I have a motto which says “The Buck Stops Here” – the decision has to be made.’”
“The Washington Post” reported that after Snyder was sworn in as Secretary of the Treasury on June 25, 1946, “Aides of the new Secretary surprised him with a gift of 12 new $1 bills engraved with his signature, obtained without his knowledge. ‘I didn’t know the Treasury worked so fast,’ Snyder remarked to reporters.” The new bills were Series 1935C. Snyder had been nominated on June 6th and confirmed on June 11th, so there was enough time to have the new bills printed by the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
