"A terrible crime has befallen our people. The President of the United States has been struck down." -Theodore Roosevelt signs off on his first official proclamation as President. An extraordinary and historically significant document!

On September 6, 1901, William McKinley became the third U.S. president to be assassinated, eight days after he was fatally shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. With the assassination, young Republican politican Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, unexpectedly became the 26th and youngest President in the Nation's history.

Roosevelt was in Vermont at the time he heard the news of McKinley's shooting, but upon visiting Buffalo, he found the president in seemingly good health given the circumstances, and believed he was out of danger. A few days alter, as he was with his family in the Adirondacks, a guide brought him the news that the president's condition had worsened, and by the time he had returned to Buffalo, McKinley had passed away.

Offered here is quite possibly one of the most significant historical documents we have ever had the pleasure of featuring, the official proclamation document issued by Roosevelt as his first duty as president, announcing McKinely's assassination. He calls the assassination "a crime not only against the Chief Magistrate, but against every law-abiding and liberty-loving citizen" and and calls for September 19th, 1901, "the day in which the body of the dead President will be laid in its last earthly resting place", as a national day of prayer and mourning. With likely only a handful of these documents printed and issued to only the most high-ranking of officials, this is surely the only of its kind that has been offered on the market. Signed in bold black steel tip at the conclusion, "Theodore Roosevelt", the document remains in very good condition with very light handling wear and signs of water damage to the top right corner, not at all affecting the text of the proclamation, nor the signature. Don't miss your opportunity to own this unique piece of U.S. history - the farewell to one president, as another steps into office, and goes onto change the course of the country's history. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS), with the autograph grading a MINT 9!
