The image of Carlton Fisk jumping and arm waving at his towering, barely fair home run in Game 6 of the ’75 World Series will forever remain in the memory of the Red Sox Nation.
Was he wearing this ’75 Red Sox jersey? Impossible to say conclusively, but there’s a very credible chance this home jersey was used in the post-season by the HOF catcher. The knit fabric is dead-on mid ‘70s, although lightly soiled and off-color due to seasons of minor league use. The front identifier and the “27” on the verso are classically and correctly fonted. Here again, the rigors of time and minor league use have rendered the two-color tackle-twill faded and wonderfully puckered. The labeling is intact with McAuliffe and size “42” sewn in tandem beneath the collar braid, and washing instructions/1975 (year label) sewn in similar fashion to the lower tail.
During the regular season, the Sox’ home jerseys sported a circular Massachusetts Bicentennial patch on the sleeve, but not during the post-season. Their storied World Series against the Reds in 1975 saw the Red Sox wearing no patch on the jersey sleeves. This Fisk offering was, with high probability, from the post-season order.
After its use, it was sent to the Spring Training site and minor league headquarters for reassignment. The jersey is a size 42, but inspection clearly shows its barrel-chested cut (measuring to 44+) and its tapered lower sides. Conjecture as to whether this one could have been strictly a minor league Pawtucket (AAA) jersey is warranted. But at the time, the majority of Pawtucket Red Sox jerseys were still recycled from the parent team, and no players wore #27 in 1975 for the Paw Sox.
