Five strands of hair belonging to Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the largest of which measures 1.5.” This unique relic that directly links us to Armstrong’s personage, is nicely housed within plastic, which has been affixed to an 8.5" x 11" sheet on light card stock below Armstrong’s Apollo 11 portrait image, and with University Archives certification along the bottom. The hair strands are light blonde or grey in color, taken from Armstrong at the age of 75. In fine condition.

Armstrong’s hair was collected over time by his barber, Marx Sizemore, who cut Armstrong’s hair about once a month since October 1999.

Accompanying the hair strands are copies of provenance from the barber and a letter from Armstrong’s representing law firm, addressed to Mr. Sizemore, regarding the hair collected. There appears to have been a controversy over the sale of the astronaut’s hair, as it was deemed a “violation of his personal rights under [Ohio Revised Code Chapter 2741]…” Armstrong requested that any money acquired from the sale of his hair would be donated to charity.

Hair collecting was a proper and very personal way of remembering someone, and began during the Victorian era. It predated photography and was deemed superior to autograph collecting as it better connected the person with the owner. Full Letter of Authenticity from John Reznikoff, a noted expert in the field, including a copy of the Guinness Book of World Record page, noting Reznikoff's collection.
