Fantastic May 7, 1865 handwritten military endorsement letter, signed at the conclusion of a 3.25” x 7.75” panel, “GA Custer, Maj Genl,” with Custer’s portion of the endorsement, reading in full: “Captain Birney served under my command for more than a year participating in several of the most important battles of the war. I can endorse the enclosed recommendation of Genl Devin having always found Capt Birney truthful, prompt, and energetic in the discharge of his duties. At Gettysburg he was severely wounded while defending the colors of his regiment. He is in every respect well qualified to fill the position asked for.” In fine condition, with expecting mailing folds and handling wear. The complete unfolded letter measures 15.5” x 9.5” and is matted and framed with an image of Custer and his fellow officers, including Gen. Philip Sheridan to an overall size of 16.25” x 31. Notable Custer offering containing Civil War content, most especially a mention of Gettysburg.
