This 13.375" x 17.5" Military Appointment dated November 1, 1837, has been personally signed by Martin Van Buren. This item is to include a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services. This item has been professionally framed to overall dimensions of approximately 29" x 33".

President Van Buren promoted Joseph Van Swearingen (1799-1837) to the rank of Captain of the 6th Regiment of Infantry of the U.S. Army, dated retroactively from July 31, 1837. Less than six months after this promotion, and two months after Van Buren signed this document, Captain Joseph Van Swearingen would be killed during the Battle of Okeechobee on Christmas Day, 1837.
