President Van Buren promoted Joseph Van Swearingen (1799-1837) to the rank of Captain of the 6th Regiment of Infantry of the U.S. Army, dated retroactively from July 31, 1837. Less than six months after this promotion, and two months after Van Buren signed this document, Captain Joseph Van Swearingen would be killed during the Battle of Okeechobee on Christmas Day, 1837.
