In the Hand of President Hayes: "To perpetuate the Union and to abolish slavery were the work of the war, to educate the uneducated is the appropriate work of peace."

Handwritten note on the reverse of a cut piece of John F. Slater Fund stationary measuring 5.5" x 5.5" and dating December 10, 1891 from President Rutherford B. Hayes. The John F. Slater Fund for the Education of Freedmen was established in 1882 as a financial endowment to be used for the education of freedmen in the Southern states. Hayes was one of the fund's original trustees, and this note from Hayes speaks directly to its mission. Hayes writes, "To perpetuate the Union and to abolish slavery were the work of the war, to educate the uneducated is the appropriate work of peace. Spiegel Grove, Fremont, O". The quote is from an address Hayes delievered at the Ohio Soldiers' Reunion in Columbus, Ohio on August 11, 1880. Signed at the conclusion with a scarce full variant of his signature, "Rutherford Birchard Hayes". There is some bleeding to a couple of parts of the quote but the signature remains unblemished. Overall in fine condition with some creasing and handling wear. Authenticated & encapsulated by Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
