After President Lincoln's funeral train arrived in New York on Tuesday, April 25, 1865, his coffin lay in state in City Hall for twelve hours. Over 150,000 people gained entrance which was less than half of the crowd that had waited outside to catch a glimpse of the President. Admiral C.H. Eldredge, who was Lincoln's Guard of Honor from 2 pm - 4 pm wore a long strip of black crepe, a swatch of which is presented here.
