Fort Leavenworth, KS

July 13, 1855

Sir,

I have this day to the Sec of War a statement with reference to an unsettled account in your office between me and the U.S. I respectfully refer you to for the necessary information and vouchers relating to $253, received by Capt. Rhett (sp?) from me but acknowledge to Col. Swords the letters accompanying my letter to him will give you the necessary date for a settlement of my account for by which the US will owe me $one $2.00. You will please give the matter our earliest attention as I am anxious to have it settled. By reference to Col. Swords (sp?) & Capt. Rhett (sp?) accounts for you will find the former credited by the latter with $253.00 which you cannot account for in any other way besides Col. Swords letter to me (which I enclose to you secretary) is an acknowledgement that the only difficulty in the matter was a mere informality in the receipt of Capt. Rhett (sp?) that the money should have been credited to me instead of himself.

I am Sir very respectfully,

Your (?)

JEB Stuart

Stuart is best known for his cavalry leadership and his role as a Confederate raider. He served as a cavalry commander for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee. Stuart's cavalry was known for its mobility, reconnaissance abilities, and effective use of mounted troops in battle. During the Civil War, Stuart participated in many major campaigns and battles. He played a key role in the First Battle of Bull Run (1861) and the Seven Days Battles (1862). Stuart also led successful cavalry raids around Union Army lines, often gathering intelligence and disrupting Union supply lines.

One of Stuart's most famous exploits was his ride around the Union Army during the Battle of Gettysburg (1863). Although his absence left General Lee without critical cavalry support during the initial stages of the battle, Stuart's forces eventually rejoined the Confederate army. Stuart's last battle was the Battle of Yellow Tavern in May 1864, where he was mortally wounded. He died the following day at the age of 31. His death was a significant loss to the Confederate Army, as he was considered one of the most skilled and charismatic cavalry commanders of the war.
