An Incredible Hand-Drawn Sketch of Picasso's Famed "Dove of Peace" Signed & Executed by the Master Artist Himself!
As one of the most influential artists of the first half of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso pioneered Cubism, collage, Symbolism, and Surrealism. At the Paris International Exposition in 1937, the Spanish Republic, afflicted by the Spanish Civil War, asked Picasso, among other artists, to create a painting for its pavilion. This is probably Picasso's most famous work, and certainly his most powerful political statement, illustrating the suffering and tragedies of war. As a result of the success and underlying message of this work, Picasso designed an image to represent peace.
In 1949, the First International Peace Conference in Paris chose his first Dove of Peace as its emblem. Unlike his typical art, this was a traditional, realistic picture of a dove, which had been given to his friend and rival, Henri Matisse. As a result, Picasso developed the image of the dove into a simple, graphic line drawing that is now one of the most recognizable symbols of peace in the world.
The Dove of Peace is one such rendering depicted here, hand signed by Picasso on off-white album paper, 6.75" x 5". Pablo Picasso has prominently signed his name across the top of the beautiful sketch of the dove with olive branch. The page is in overall fine condition, with light overall rippling. It has been preserved with museum quality hinging, matting, glazing and acid free materials to ensure the condition of the piece does not deteriorate. This work of art is ready for immediate and prominent display (16” x 19” framed).
It is understandable that Picasso's renderings are valuable, and this portrayal of the iconic international peace emblem is no exception. It is impossible to overstate the value and rarity of this sketch. This is a rare opportunity, arguably the greatest artist of the 20th century, for art and history collectors!
