Seldom seen handwritten & signed 1832 letter by Indian religious/political leader Ram Mohan Roy. Letter reads in full: 'My dear Madam, In reply to your note of yesterday I can not express the regret which I feel at the circumstances that have so mortifyingly rendered me unable to comply with the request you have the goodness to make on behalf of a friend of yours. Having been previously engaged to a friend of mine in the country I can not embrace your kind offer without a breach of the rules of society. I beg to assure you that I very often endanger my health (which is declining in consequence) to gratify the wishes of persons with some of whom I am slightly acquainted; and how much more I must feel mortified at being unable to meet the wishes of a lady from whom I have experienced so many marks of kindness. I remain with sincere regard dear Madam, Yours very faithfully, Rammohun Roy'. Overall in fine condition with minor spotting & horizontal folds.
