A unique offering that highlights one of the most significant lineup changes in Rock N’ Roll history, presented here is a black and white photograph of The Beatles with Pete Best in the Cavern Club taken on Friday December 8th 1961. Known to be one of the earliest Beatles photographs in existence,the photo shows a very youthful Beatles lineup, one which was about to undergo a significant overhaul. Approximately eight months after taking this photograph, Best would be dismissed by Brian Epstein (The Beatles’ manager) and was quickly replaced by popular Liverpool drummer Ringo Starr. The photo has been autographed on the reverse by the extremely rare Fab 5 John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in black ballpoint pen. John and Paul have added the word ‘love’ before their respective names. The signatures date from late 1962 shortly after Ringo Starr joined the group and represent one of the earliest known group signature sets with Ringo. It was so early in Ringo’s tenure with the band that the fan who acquired the autograph was apparently unable to find a photo of the band with Ringo in it!
Interestingly the photograph has also been signed by Pete Best in blue ballpoint pen. The signature was added much later, possibly in the 1980’s. But given the unique nature of the photo, Best’s autograph is fitting, and this piece stands as one of only a select few items ever known to be sign by Best and Ringo together.
The photo measures approximately 7.8” x 6.2”. Trimmed slightly along the left and bottom edges and a few small tape stains which does not detract from the image’s otherwise very good condition and appearance. The photo has been housed in an attractive and unique custom framed archival display which allows for viewing of both the front and the back side of the photograph.
