Appropriately enough, the name of Alexander Graham Bell evokes thoughts of the telephone, the remarkable device that forever revolutionized communication. The ability to transmit the spoken voice, by means of wires connected across long distances, was a great stride in mankind's quest for technological achievement. Bell (1847-1922) first tested his new device in 1875, and was thus still a young man when the success of the invention ensured financial security for him and his family. Not content to simply rest, however, Bell directed his forces of imagination and intellect in new directions. He expanded his experiments in the area of telecommunications, and developed techniques for teaching speech to the deaf. During the 1890's, his continuing fascination with science and discovery led Bell to become interested in the recently-formed National Geographic Society and its publication. The Society's declared purpose, to give ordinary people exposure to the world's sights and phenomena, was consistent with Bell's philosophy. He became the Society's president in 1898, succeeding Gardiner Greene Hubbard, his father-in-law and the organization's founding leader. Bell was the first renowned and "famous" person to promote the Society, and it rapidly gained stature from his involvement.

Offered here is a rare typed letter signed "Alexander Graham Bell", one page, 8" x 10.5", December 18, 1900, done by Bell as President of the National Geographic Society. A brief letter of response discussing talking about "The explorations and missions of the Fransician Fathers in California". Signed at the conclusion in a rich black steel tip pen. Letter features light uniform toning and light fold impressions from mailing but is otherwise very fine. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
