Ink signature, “Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens, Harrisburgh, Twenty fifth March 1842,” on an off-white 7.5 x 2.5 slip. Slip has been tipped in to the beginning of a hardcover volume of American Notes. In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, another vertical fold near right edge and a bit of light toning. At the time of the signature, Dickens was at the United States Hotel in Philadelphia and had been interviewed by Edgar Allen Poe a few days before.

American Notes for General Circulation; New York, Harper & Brothers, 1842. Bound together with Change for the American Notes; New York, Harper & Brothers, 1843. Hardcover; G-/None. Brown marbled paper-covered boards; heavy rubbing, chips and bumps to exterior, heaviest along spine-edges; front cover and first gathering detached along approx. 2/3 of hinge; discoloration and light foxing throughout; previous owner’s name to ffep and title page; upper and lower third of dedication page torn out and missing; corresponding tears through first page of text but entire page is still present/attached at spine. With the exception of the front cover and first few pages, the binding is tight. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
