Rare signed letter by Robert Stroud "Birdman of Alcatraz" at the conclusion, “Bob, Robert Stroud #594" (his Alcatraz prisoner number). He also printed his name once at the top in the return address area, “Robert Stroud". One page, both sides, 8" x 10.25," dated December 15, 1952. A very interesting letter written to his sisterm Mamie E. Stroud. He thanks her for a letter and card she sent him, comments on a cold she has had and how many of his fellow prisoners have suffered from illness recently as well. However, more interestingly, it appears that she has expressed her concern about Dwight D. Eisenhower's recent election to Presidency, as much of his letter is in response to this. Reads, in part: "I think that Ike will be o.k. We have had good and bad generals in the White House, but they were the same before they went in there. The one they criticize most was Grant, but outside of being a completely ruthless soldier, he never was any good for anything and the people should have known it before they elected him. He was the same man in the White House that he was in the wilderness. On the other hand, Ike has always been a good man and I do not think that he will chance, and am very much encouraged by the appointments he has made so far." With the controversial results of our most recent election, the content of this letter is relevant, as Eisenhower was a controversial candidate as well in the fearful political climate of the Cold War. Horizontal folds, and light toning with some scattered staining, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
