William H. Seward was the Secretary of State of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Offered here is a March 25, 1867 document signed by Seward stating that "Joseph S. Able of Robertson County, Texas, by taking part in the late rebellion against the Government of the United States, has made himself liable to heavy pains and penalties". Signed by Seward at the conclusion, along with a stamped autograph of Andrew Johnson (who was the first President to commonly have his name stamped on documents rather than hand-signing). In fair condition with two vertical and one horizontal fold and some scattered spotting.
