Serving as the 39th President of the United States from January 20, 1977 – January 20, 1981, President Jimmy Carter would see his far share of ups-and-downs. One of his controversial moments came in his home town of Plains, Georgia while fishing on 4-20-1979. The President was fishing solo when, as the story goes, a rabbit was being chased by wolves and jumped into the lake swimming towards the President's canoe, with Carter fearful of the critter, he splashed at it with a oar. Shortly following the event during April of 1979, this original 11" x 14" photograph was signed by President Carter who adds "With Thanks to Karl Schumacher, Jimmy Carter, 4-79", the President would refuse to signed or even release the photograph to the photograph following August of 1979. The Washington Post picked up on the story & with the White House's refusal to release the photograph resulted in the newspaper using a cartoon parody of the Jaws poster labeled "PAWS" as its illustration. It took until the Reagan administration until the photograph was actually released, making this not only an item of interest during that time, but political standing with the President/former President's direct orders to not release the image to the public. Carter to this day will not comment on the innocent, let alone sign the image, making this offering extremely scarce. Overall in fine condition with minor discoloration, matted to an overall size of 15" x 19" & signed by original photographer Karl Schumacher who adds, "Killer Rabbit" Plains, GA Apr 1979.
