The 40th U.S. Congress met from March 4, 1867 to March 4, 1869, during the final two years of Andrew Johnson's presidency. This frank, postmarked March 20 (it is unknown whether that would be 1867 or 1868), is addressed to Joseph H. Wilson, Commissioner of the General Land Office, and has been franked by then-Representative James A. Garfield in the top right hand corner. In overall good condition, this is the first official Congress Meeting frank we have ever offered! With President Johnson's impeachment occurring on February 24, 1868, this March 20th dated correspondence could very well have come just shortly after one of the biggest shake-ups the government has ever seen. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
