Just as the U.S. is currently at high levels of tension in their relationship with Mexico, we offer here a typewritten signed letter on White House letterhead from President Harry Truman extending the opposite sentiments and praising the ever-growing relationship between the northern and southern neighbors. Truman was the first U.S. President to visit Mexico City in 1947, and prior to that he wrote this letter to the Secretary of the Treasury John Snyder. In the letter, dated November 25, 1946, Truman pronounces his delight that the Secretary will be attending the new Mexican President's inauguration and his disappointment that he, himself, would not be able to attend. However, he asks the Secretary to convey his warmest greetings and hope to visit the country in the following year (a promise which he proves to keep). In a poignant final paragraph, Truman writes, "...I have observed with great pleasure the good relations which have existed between our two Governments and our two peoples during recent years and...hope that these happy relations will continue. I am thoroughly aware of the importance of close cooperation and understanding between Mexico and the United States, and the Government of the United States will make every possible effort to cooperate with the Government of Mexico for a better mutual understanding in the best interests of both countries." A unique letter regarding diplomatic relations that are just as topical today as ever. In fine condition with some toning. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
