Michele Besso was a prominent Swiss/Italian engineer and a close friend of Albert Einstein. Einstein was known to have called Besso "the best sounding board in Europe" for scientific ideas. He is the only person to have been credited in Einstein's original paper on Special Relativity, with the legendary scientist stating at the conclusion, "In conclusion I wish to say that in working at the problem here dealt with I have had the loyal assistance of my friend and colleague M. Besso, and that I am indebted to him for several valuable suggestions." Offered here is a World War I-era handwritten letter in German from Einstein dated March 11, 1918, in which he asks his friend Besso for assistance in caring for his children and soon-to-be ex-wife while Einstein goes to live with his mistress (future second wife). Signed at the conclusion on the reverse "Albert". The letter measures 5.5" x 4" and stands in overall fine condition with minor handling wear.
