Thomas J. Jackson (1824-1863) was hired to teach at the Virginia Military Institute in 1851, taking the newly created position of Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, or Physics, and Instructor of Artillery. Jackson was not a popular teacher and in 1856, a group of alumni even tried to have Jackson removed. James Peter Baltzell (c. 1830-1868) was a native of Texas and enlisted as a Captain in the Confederate Army. He was later appointed Provost Marshal of the Confederate Army in 1863.
