A large format Parlophone Records promotional card that has been autographed on the front by The Beatles. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison have signed in blue ballpoint pen. George has added the inscription ‘To Maureen lots of love from’ at the top of the card and three kiss symbols ‘xxx’ after his name, Paul added three kiss symbols under his signature, John has added one kiss symbol ‘x’ under his signature, Ringo has added two kiss symbols ‘xx’ under his autograph.
The autographs were obtained at the ABC theatre, Exeter, England on 14th November 1963. The image on the front of the card was taken by Angus McBean on 21st January 1963 at EMI House, Manchester Square, London.
Accompanied by a letter from the original recipient that reads ‘The date was November 1963 and we were a group of very excitable teenagers who had booked to see the Beatles in a show at the ABC Cinema in Exeter, Devon, SW England. We were in the same class at school so we were all 16 years old.
After school on the day of the concert we walked into the town centre of Exeter, still in our school uniform, and roamed around the shops. There, outside Boots the chemist were four lads with hair that was instantly recognizable, it was of course the Fab Four. We were all very excited and they chatted to us and asked if we were coming to the concert “oh yes” we were overwhelmed , they weren’t much older than us and seemed so very ‘normal’.
They asked if we would like their autographs, so we went to the side door of the cinema and waited ‘till they came back with the signed picture. We often say how lucky we were to meet them at the start of their brilliant career and be part of this whole new era of music that defined our teenage years. Their music still has the ability to bring back fabulous memories of parties, boyfriends, friendships.
My goodness how we screamed that night as they sang just for us. Happy days, happy memories’.
The promotional card measures 19cm x 12.5cm (7.5 inches x 4.9 inches). The card has been folded in half and laid flat, trimmed on the left edge. The condition is very good.
