Arguably the Greatest Song Writing Duo In History Sign Off on A Large Royalties Check, Payable to John Lennon!
When it comes to signed Beatles checks, there’re arguable none more sought after than duel signed checks from John Lennon & Paul McCartney as directors of Maclen Music. Maclen Music, formally controlled by controversial Beatles publishing company Northern Songs (Dissolved 1995), was established by Paul & John in 1975 in an attempt to control publishing & royalties with their US record sales from 1975-1978. As a result to blind contract signings by The Beatles with their former manager Brain Epstein which led to a slew of lawsuits following his passing, John & Paul became savvier about their business dealings with Maclen Music & required both directors (John & Paul) to sign off on nearly every check issued.
Being offered here is one of the rare 7.75” x 2.5”, 1975 Maclen Music check examples payable to John Lennon for a huge sum of £96,154.0.0 ($200,327.25 in 1975 & nearly a million dollars in today’s money) issued on September 1st, 1975. Filled out in another hand and boldly signed in green felt tip by “John Lennon”, and in blue ballpoint by, “Paul McCartney”. Considering the sum along with the dating, on the first of the month, one could infer that this check was written to Lennon for his royalties & participation in The Beatles catalog during that month/quarter. An extremely scarce “lost weekend” signature by John coupled with the possible historical significance of this check makes this a fantastic post-breakup example of a rare duel signed check regarding one of the last business ventures by arguable one of the best songwriting duos of all time.
