5" x 3" signed & handwritten note-card, autograph “Jackie” in London on April 27/28, 1966. With original envelope, 4.5” x 3.25”, imprinted across top “On Her Majesty’s Service,” addressed by Mrs. Kennedy to “The Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara.”
The former First Lady Mrs. Kennedy writes in full, “Dearest Bob – I am so sorry to miss you / With much love / Jackie.” McNamara wrote in pencil in upper right “London / 4-28-66” and at lower left edge Folded vertically by Mrs. Kennedy 1.25” inches from the left edge to fit in the envelope.
After an eight-day visit to Spain, Jacqueline Kennedy arrived in London on Monday, April 26, 1966, to visit her sister, Princess Lee Radziwill. She then left London and flew to New York on April 28th. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara arrived in London on Wednesday evening, April 28th for two days of talks on NATO nuclear planning. Undoubtedly, Jackie left flowers, lilies of the valley, for her friend Bob McNamara, to be delivered to his room, “437,” upon his arrival. Lilies of the valley, native to Europe, bloom in the Spring.
